Netherlands FIFA World Cup Records in Historical Context
- The Netherlands have never been eliminated from the group stages (1934 and 1938 editions had no group stages, both tournaments started from the Round of 16). Whenever the Netherlands qualified for a FIFA World Cup, they have always played the knockout stages.
- The Netherlands finished as runners-up in 1974 and 1978, as they became the first team to finish as the runners-up for consecutive editions.
- After Germany, who hold the record for most FIFA World Cup runners-up by recording it four times, the Netherlands became the second team to record three FIFA World Cup runners-up, which they achieved in the 1974, 1978, and 2010 editions. In the next edition (2014), Argentina equalised the Netherlands’ record of the second most FIFA World Cup runners-up finishing.
