Italy FIFA World Cup Records in Historical Context
- After Uruguay (1930), Italy became the second hosts to win the FIFA World Cup by winning the title in the 1934 edition. It was their first FIFA World Cup participation, as they won their first FIFA World Cup title on debut.Β
- Italy were the first team to win the FIFA World Cup title in back-to-back editions by winning the titles in 1934 and 1938.Β
- Italy are the only team to win four FIFA World Cup titles on European soil. After winning the title in the 1934 edition as the hosts, Italy also won the title in the 1938 edition in France, 1982 in Spain, and 2006 in Germany.
- After Brazil (5 times), Italy became the second team to win the FIFA World Cup title more than three times when they lifted the title in the 2006 edition. Germany later won their fourth FIFA World Cup title in the 2014 edition.Β
- Italy were the only defending champions who were eliminated more than once (1950 and 2010).
- Since their FIFA World Cup 2006 Final win, Italy havenβt played a knockout match in the FIFA World Cup yet. While they were eliminated from the group stages in the 2010 and 2014 editions, they failed to qualify for the tournament in the 2018 and 2022 editions.
- In the 2006 edition, Italy conceded only two goals while winning the title (excluding the penalty shootouts in the tie-breaker). It is the joint record for fewest goals conceded by the champions in FIFA World Cup history, as Italy equalled the record of 1998 champions France, while later in the 2010 edition, Spain also equalised this record.
